Kokua's spectacular deli

Over the past several months I have been visiting Kokua's deli with greater and greater frequency. Even though I work in the Kalihi area, if I have an extra few minutes at lunch, I will make the drive to Kokua to pick up a plate. Don't get me wrong, I still will go to Kenny's or Gulick Deli in Kalihi but I know that my choices for delicious and healthy food expand… Continue

Our Favorite Hawaii Food Books

Hawaii Farmer's Market Cookbook

We are blessed in the Islands with literally dozens of cookbooks. Among my faves is the Hawaii Farmer's Market Cookbook by food write Joan Namkoong. Joan puts together a wonderful array of dishes that are easy to prepare and can really take full advantage of what grows here in Hawaii. In this tough economy, as more of us are cooking at home, this book is even… Continue

MA`O Farms Work Day: A Win-Win Situation

This morning I woke up with a cough and a sore throat. I was pretty sure I didn't want to get out of bed. I was even more sure that I didn't want to get in my car, drive to Wai`anae and work on a hot and dusty farm. But somehow I made it to MA`O Organic Farms and I'm really glad I did.

For the first time, members of the Kokua Market community volunteered at a monthly event: the MA`O Farms G.I.V.E. Day (G.I.V.E. stands for Get Involved Volunteer Environmentally). We organized this… Continue

Screening of Food, Inc.

We went to a screening of "Food, Inc." on September 8 at Punahou School. It was a wonderful event with a pretty packed audience of probably a few hundred people who were all concerned about the food that we eat, how it gets made, and how it gets to us. I noted many Kokua owners in the audience and was very proud that our cooperative has been at the forefront of this movement for decades. I think that as many have realized that "organic" and "local" are critical, more and more people will see… Continue

Thoughts on Labor Day

Not that long ago, we were all much closer to our food. That means, we grew it ourselves or we bought it from people we knew who grew it themselves. As we have moved further away from our food, our relationship with food has changed and not all for the better. Food is cheaper and plentiful in much of the world. Yet more and more of the food we consume is processed and unhealthy.

In our home, we have been growing our own food for some time. Not enough to sustain us but enough to… Continue
