Food, Inc Showing

In an effort to bring Kokua Market member-owners and the public closer to the food they eat and continue to dialogue about the benefits of local agriculture and local food systems, the Office of Public Health Studies at UH and Kokua Market are co-sponsoring a screening of Food, Inc. followed by a panel discussion including Gary Maunakea-Forth, Managing Director of Ma'o Organic Farms and Ed Kenney from town restaurant. Food from the Kokua deli will be available.

Oh, and you can't miss this: A blog written by Monsanto's PR guy comparing Food Inc to their company's practices in which they claim patenting genes is the same as copyright infringement! That's like equating a pen (invention) with a book (work of authorship), except their "pen" happens to be the essence of life.

Hi Kim, Thanks for pointing out all these fantastic movies for everyone in this community. Didn't realize Botany of Desire is now a film. Will have to check that out for sure. Flow is a fascinating movie, and the venue for that upcoming event is also great (Baby aWEARness). Hope people will see it as well as coming to the Food, Inc screening coming up soon.

So great to see this event happening. I loved this movie. Though it was somewhat depressing.

Food issues are tied to water issues. There are a number of good films about this. I think starting this with the Pollan book is an important place to start. I, unfortunately, will be out of state but would be happy to create a small bibliography on food, food processing, and global food issues that could be handed out at the meeting--if desirable. Deane
